Cause and effect In these types of questions two statements are given which may or may not be related to each other by cause effect relationship. The question is followed by four or five options but limiting to CLAT only four options are provided. A question of this type is as follows: Statements: I the prices of petrol and diesel have remained constant or unchanged in the domestic market. II the prices of crude oil in the international market has increased substantially in the past few months Options: a If statement I is the cause and II is the effect b If statement II is the cause and I is the effect c If statement I and II are independent causes d If statement I and II are effects of some independent causes. e If statement I and II are effects of some common causes. I will explain you by options How to determine cause effect relationship? It is very easy to determine cause effect relationship. This can very easily be done If then test. Connect both the statements with help of if then and if you find them logically correct then statement after if is the cause and statement after then is the effect. In the above example if you try to connect the statement with the help of above test you won't find them logically correct. Hence the possibility of answer being among options one and two is ruled out. Consider this statement: I literacy has increased in the past few years. II Government has taken step as a part of literacy drive. Now using if then test you can determine this. If the government has taken steps as a part of literacy drive then literacy has increased. Hence statement II is the cause and I is the effect. Note: These questions require prior general knowledge and some facts about various fields. For example in the above question you need to have some knowledge about economics and how prices of petrol are controlled. Please decide the answer only if you have some information about the statements. Only if you have some knowledge you will be able to decide whether it is correct or not. If you find that the statements are not in a cause and effect relationship then you have to check by options. If the statements are not related to each other then you have to determine whether the statements individually are cause or effects. This too requires very basic knowledge about facts. There are two possibilities if the statements individually are effects. One is they are effect of some common cause and one is they are effect of independent cause. In the above example the answer is d as the statements are effect of some common cause. The reason for this is that statements are not related to a common cause. Statement I is the effect of government having control over prices and Statement II is the effect of some changes in the international market. Hence the cause are not related to each other. Example of effects of some common cause: Statement I: Police have increased security arrangements across the city Statement II: Authorities have asked people to stay alert. Both the statements are not in a cause effect relationship but they are effects of some common cause. The cause in this case is Police and authorities are warned by IB regarding the possibility of terror attack in the city. Note: if the statements are not connected by cause and effect relationship then determine very carefully whether the statements are cause or effect. This topic is very easy and requires practice. So Google cause and effect and solve some problems to increase your practice.
