" Every institute has its own legacy and at DMS- IITD we believe in doing better than what we are doing at the moment," says Kanika Bhal, Head of Department, DMSIITD. The institute has produced more than seven dozen doctorates in the last three decades of its existence. Post- graduate management education took off in IIT- Delhi in 1976 under the leadership of Professor Sudhir Kakar, the first coordinator of the programme in what was then the School of Systems and Management Studies. As it went up the evolution ladder, the school acquired the statutory status of the Department Management Studies under the IIT Delhi Act in 1993. Professor Vinay Shil Gautam was then the department head and he continues to be on the faculty. The department was allowed to use the formal appellation, Master of Business Administration ( MBA), for its post- graduate programme from 1997. The department now runs two two- year, fulltime MBA programmes, one focused on Management Systems and another on Telecommunication Systems Management under the auspices of the Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management, and a three- year, part time programme that lets students specialise in Technology Management. Apart from the compulsory programmes, students also have the choice to opt for courses in Finance, Marketing, Information Technology and HR. The MBA programmes at DMS- IITD, according to Bhal, have been designed keeping in mind the changes in business environment and the needs of the country. The department's alumni would concur with her. Recalls Sandeep Malhotra, DMS- IITD Class of 1999 and Senior Director, ICICI Ventures: " Almost every teacher threw us at the deep end. The problems were almost always so unstructured that you had to think beyond the subject and the curriculum to get the right answers and complete the assignments." His best memory, though, is of a tech- savvy department that was technologically a generation ahead of the competition. " We submitted online assignments and built IT- based solutions around business problems in 1998- 99 when most colleges were still coming to terms with the internet," says Malhotra. " A very important lesson we learnt was that the use of technology would have a huge impact on the success of businesses. At a time when IT was still being seen as a support function, we were learning how it was going to be a great business enabler," Malhotra adds. " The approach of thinking across all dimensions is helpful when you step into the corporate world." The sheer number of research papers its faculty members have got published in national and international journals — 1,000 of them in addition to five dozen books — places DMS- IITD among Delhi- NCR's top five B- Schools. And its Journal of Advances in Management Research is one of the few departmental journals that is published by Emerald, one of the UK's leading publishing houses. And as if all this wasn't enough, the DMS- IITD faculty has served on the board of corporate and government entities such as the All India Council for Technical Education ( AICTE) and played a key role in establishing the fifth and seventh IIMs at Kozhikode and Shillong, respectively. | | | | |
