  • Former army chief General (retd) VK Singh, who has associated himself with anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare after retirement in May, is likely to be one of the 10 core team members of Hazare's non-political outfit.
  • The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has asked the coal ministry to take up de-allocation of another 32 coal blocks for which notices have been issued over "unsatisfactory progress". These blocks are in addition to the 58 for which show-cause notices were issued to the developers and the PMO asked the ministry to speed up the de-allocation process.
  • The Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium officer was suspended for allowing Sri Lankan football players to play a friendly match with a Customs Department team last week.
  • Jenson Button coasted to his second victory of the season at the crash-marred Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, with Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton forced out after a spectacular pileup at the start.
  • India lifted the Nehru Cup for the third consecutive time beating Cameroon 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. Sunil Chhetri, Robin Singh, Denzil Franco, Mehtab Hossain and Clifford Miranda all scored from the spot
  • An estimated 150 Indian students out of a total of 600 impacted in some form could be in danger of immediate deportation from Britain after the immigration authority, the United Kingdom Border Agency, revoked London Metropolitan University's licence to admit or teach anyone from outside the European Union.
  • Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday called Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray a 'sir phira' (crazed) for his statement that people from Bihar were "infiltrators" into Mumbai. Nitish also said Raj's threats were a challenge to the authority of the Maharashtra government as well as the Centre.
  • The first glimpses of the much-awaited mobile devices based on Windows 8 operating system have started doing the rounds on technology forums and blogs. South Korean electronics giant Samsung last week previewed its first smartphone that is based on Windows 8.
  • US President Barack Obama and his defenders will seek to convince voters at next week's Democratic Party national convention to stick with the President they know rather than gamble on someone new — a challenge since most Americans say the country is heading in the wrong direction.
  • Haryana Police has registered a case against a US-based shoe manufacturing company for hurting the religious sentiments of Buddhists by promoting a range of shoes with Lord Buddha's images.
  • A new proposed bill aims to provide relief to mentally ill patients across the country. Prepared by the law and health ministries, it will ensure that patients are not dumped in hospitals and mental asylums for more than six months or given electric shocks without their prior consent.
  • The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has held that damages awarded in a case cannot be equated with income and are thus, not liable to attract tax deducted at source. The NCDRC passed the order while directing the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to refund the TDS it had subtracted from the compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh it paid to a couple for the death of their daughter.

  • Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker in terms of market share, is automating certain critical production functions in its manufacturing plants that will bring its Manesar operations on par with its hi-tech plants in Hamamatsu, Japan.
